Car alarms work by emitting high-volume sound (often a vehicle-mounted siren, klaxon, pre-recorded verbal warning, the vehicle's own horn, or a combination of these) when the conditions necessary for triggering it are met. Such alarms may also cause the vehicle's headlights to flash, may notify the car's owner of the incident via a paging system, and may interrupt one or more electrical circuits necessary for the car to start. Although inexpensive to acquire and install, the effectiveness of such devices in deterring vehicle burglary or theft when their only effect is to emit sound appears to be negligible. 3 Arming and disarming of car alarms An early version of a car alarm for use as a theft deterrent was invented by an unknown prisoner from Denver in 1913.[1] This version was manually armed, and triggered when someone tried to crank the engine. A later alarm inspired by an early version of a remote starter was published in 1916.[2] This version had the car owner carry a receiver, which would buzz if the car ignition system was tampered with.

Ring announces new line of security cameras for cars Also working with Tesla and others to integrate existing cameras into the Ring platform By Dan Seifert@dcseifert Sep 24, 2020, 1:27pm EDT Ring has announced its first foray into products meant for use outside of the home with a new line of security cameras designed for cars. The new Car Cam, Car Alarm, and Car Connect systems integrate into the same Ring app that supports the company’s home security alarm, video doorbells, and security cameras, and they provide owners with alerts for attempted break-ins. The new products are slated for availability starting next year. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff says the reason for expanding into the automotive market is in response to customers who have been asking for ways to secure their vehicles in a similar way to their homes with Ring products. The $59.99 Car Alarm is the simplest of the devices — it plugs into your car’s OBD-II diagnostic port and sends alerts to your phone when it detects a break-in, someone trying to tow the vehicle, or if another vehicle hits your car. The Car Alarm has a built-in siren that can be triggered remotely, and it can be linked to other Ring or Alexa devices to sound audible alerts when an event is detected. For connectivity, the Car Alarm utilizes its parent company Amazon’s new Sidewalk network, which was announced last year and is starting to see some real products and development on it now. Amazon says Sidewalk will officially launch later this year.

Blog Home Products & Innovation A New Ring of Security: Introducing Ring Security for Cars By Jamie Siminoff on September 24, 2020 One of the best parts of my job at Ring is hearing directly from our customers. With my email on every box, I hear from them daily and the number one product customers have been requesting over the years is a product that keeps their car secure. We listened, and today I’m excited to announce a new lineup of security products specifically designed for cars. This new line of products brings everything people love about Ring to the car – they are easy-to-use, affordable and effective. And we created several devices to ensure that no matter what car you drive, or what your specific needs are, there’s a solution for you. Ring Car Alarm is an affordable solution designed to protect the car at home and around the neighborhood. Packed with sensors, the device sends an alert immediately to the Ring app when it detects an event, such as a bump, break-in, tow-away or an attempt to open the door. When you receive the alert you can quickly check the last-known location of the vehicle and take action by triggering the built-in siren. There’s no subscription thanks to the Amazon Sidewalk Network, which wirelessly sends alerts and location information to the Ring App when in coverage. You can even link your compatible Alexa-enabled devices to have the alerts announced over your home speakers. Best of all, the Ring Car Alarm links to other Ring devices, such as the Ring Floodlight Cam, turning the device into a virtual tripwire that can activate additional deterrents and video recording when triggered.
