There’s more to life than dancing. There’s bonnet making, soap making, candle making, wool spinning and more. At least that’s what you’ll hear if you ask Mavis Gippner, a long time volunteer with The Friends of Missouri Town 1855. Gippner is the dance instructor at Missouri Town, but she does so much more. Mavis and her husband, Mick, share in all the activities. “I am the caller for the Missouri Town Dancers,” Mavis Gippner said. “We dance at every special event.” The caller is the person who calls out the dance steps to the dancers. Most people are familiar with square dancing, which uses a caller, but square dancing is far too modern for Missouri Town. “Quadrilles were the first of the square dances.” Mavis Gippner said. “Contra dancing is also quite popular.”
