The Estate of Norman Lewis is happy to announce that it is now represented by Michael Rosenfeld Gallery. Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis This beautifully illustrated catalog accompanies the first major museum retrospective of the painter Norman Lewis (1909-1979). Lewis was the sole African-American artist of his generation who became committed to issues of abstraction at the start of his career and continued to explore them over its entire trajectory. His art derived inspiration from music (jazz and classical) and nature (seasonal change, plant forms, the sea).  Also central to his work were the dramatic confrontations of the Civil Rights Movement, in which he was an active participant among the New York art scene.

Jul 14, 2017 ... As an acclaimed designer and founder of Landor, Walter was invited to ... Kubly through the student gallery at the Art Center College of Design. Inside the Studio with Walter Landor In celebration of our founder’s birthday this month, we’re doing a special Inside the Studio feature on Walter Landor. As an acclaimed designer and founder of Landor, Walter was invited to give the 1985 commencement speech at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In the below speech, he offers the graduating class sound advice to help them succeed in their careers—advice that is just as relevant to designers today as it was then. Five secrets for a successful design career, as told by Walter Landor President Kubly, distinguished members of the faculty, ladies, and gentlemen. This could be a serious speech, the kind of commencement address bent on propelling you into “the jungle of real life.” But it won’t be. I promise. What I really would like to do is amuse you with all the mistakes I have made since I left art school in London after two years of study. But, I don’t think President Kubly would think much of my telling you about the first time I read a speech before an art college audience many years ago. It put one attractive coed to sleep after five minutes. But it all worked out very well. I married her at the end of the term—she had shown such good judgment. This surely is no time for gloomy reflections on the perils of the real world. This is a commencement—a beginning, a time for hope and optimism. For some of you, a time of euphoria. After all, how can you people miss when you get out there? You have had the intelligence and foresight to spend the best years of your life at the best design college in this country, perhaps on this planet. And you have worked very hard these last three or four years, I’m sure.
