Browning, Lamie & Gifford, P.C. has the following attorneys to assist you with your legal matters: Larry was born in Grundy, Virginia and is a graduate of Grundy High School. He attended the University of Richmond for both undergraduate and law degrees. He returned to Southwest Virginia in 1972 to begin his law practice in Abingdon, Virginia, with James Russell Moore. He soon opened a Grundy, Virginia office and now exclusively represents Social Security Disability clients from our region. He maintains his office in Rosedale, Virginia, but can also be reached in our Grundy, Virginia, office. Larry was a pioneer in the exclusive practice of social security and administrative law in Southwest Virginia. He has over 40 years of experience appearing before Administrative Law Judges at the Social Security Administration, and takes pride in being an advocate for those needing disability benefits. He maintains a residence in Grundy, Virginia. Contact Larry at lbrowning@blglaw.us John was born in Saltville, Virginia. His family moved to Bristol, and he graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School and King College. He attended law school at the University of Tennessee, and after graduation moved to Abingdon, Virginia, to practice law with Browning, Morefield, Schelin and Arrington, which later became Browning, Lamie & Gifford. He practices out of the firm’s Abingdon office and see clients at all of the firm’s offices. He handles personal injury, bankruptcy, social security, disability insurance claims, and other civil litigation. His trial experience includes jury and non-jury matters in state, U.S. District and U.S. Bankruptcy courts. He has also argued appellate cases before the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Virginia Supreme Court. In 2003, he appeared before the U. S. Supreme Court in the case of Lamie v. U.S. Trustee. His professional service has included two terms on the Board of Directors for the Bankruptcy Section of the Virginia State Bar and as a panel member of the 10th District Ethics Committee. The Supreme Court of Virginia appointed him to the panel of Administrative Hearing Officers in 1983. He served in that role for fifteen years and conducted hearings for the Division of Mines, various boards and other agencies of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

A Democrat from West Virginia, he was elected four times as West Virginia Attorney General, serving from 1969 to 1985. Browning was born in Charleston in 1934, the son of Chauncey Browning Sr. and Evelyn Mahone Browning. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the West Virginia University in 1956. He attended the West Virginia University College of Law, serving as the editor-in-chief of West Virginia Law Review, receiving his law degree in 1958. Following graduation, Browning served as a law clerk to Judge Benjamin Franklin Moore of the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. He engaged in the practice of law in Charleston and subsequently served as the state Commissioner of Public Institutions. Browning was elected Attorney General in 1968 and re-elected in 1972, 1976 and 1980. He was the first Attorney General to serve four terms in West Virginia's history. He is also the only West Virginia Attorney General to have served as president of the National Association of Attorneys General. During his tenure, Browning established the Consumer Protection Division and reviewed and revised environmental and natural resources laws, rules and regulations. Also during his tenure, West Virginia sued the Pittston Coal Company for $100 million in damages for the February 26, 1972 Buffalo Creek Flood. Governor Arch A. Moore Jr. later settled the suit for $1 million.
