Early in 1979 Mabel Barth, Denver resident, became newly aware of student needs for someone to listen and respond to them. Wanting to act positively, she negotiated with schools for a pilot project-- and, on April 3, 1979, The Listening Post began. Volunteers from the community, trained to listen, are present in a school lunchroom weekly on ordinary school days. They place a red-checked cloth on an ordinary table, set out some simple snacks and a table sign reading: THE LISTENING POST-- A PLACE TO TALK. When the lunchroom doors open, dozens of youngsters cluster around the table eager to talk with their adult friend about all the issues of growing up. At the high school and college levels, topics are more likely to be career and marriage plans and life's imponderables. The Listening Post is not just limited to schools. Nursing Homes, places of worship and hospitals also need your help.
