Thousands of San Antonio public housing units lack air conditioning

Apr 21, 2019 ... It's only April 10, but it's already 92 degrees in San Antonio. And 91 degrees inside Margarita Ramos' apartment. Rather than sit on her living ... 100-plus highs are common in San Antonio. Yet there's no beating the heat in the 40% of public housing units without AC. A lawmaker and a philanthropist say that's got to change. Margarita Ramos lives in a public housing apartment at Alazan-Apache Courts. It doesn’t have air conditioning. It’s only April 10, but it’s already 92 degrees in San Antonio. And 91 degrees inside Margarita Ramos’ apartment. Rather than sit on her living room sofa, Ramos is sprawled across the linoleum floor. She picks that spot for a reason: Sometimes, she can feel a breeze blowing through the windows and front door. The slight draft and a single box fan in her 13-year-old son’s bedroom are the only cooling sources in the two-bedroom apartment. There’s no ceiling fan. There’s no air conditioner, either. Margarita Ramos lies on the floor in front of an open window in her public housing apartment at Alazan-Apache Courts. Ramos lives in the Alazan-Apache Courts, which was San Antonio’s first public housing community when it opened in 1940. Back then, the apartments were a big step up for West Side residents who’d lived in homes with dirt floors and no indoor plumbing. But nearly eight decades later, the units lack basic amenities. Most conspicuous, and potentially dangerous, is the absence of air conditioning. In San Antonio, where temperatures soared to 109 degrees last summer, almost 2,400 public housing apartments — about 40 percent of the units — aren’t equipped with air conditioning. Statewide, at least 7,400 apartments subsidized by federal tax dollars lack cooling capabilities, according to a San Antonio Express-News survey.

TAKE A NEW LOOK AT FITNESS IN THE NEW YEAR What are some of the best ways to stay fit and healthy? Blue Skies of Texas staff members have some spectacular ideas they’d like to share with you. Join us for this free virtual seminar and fitness sampler! We moved here to find the best of both worlds! Not only did we want to make new friends, but since we were San Antonio residents already, we’ve also been able to maintain relationships with local friends, neighbors, and volunteer responsibilities. Moving here while still able to live independently, we have taken the hard task of providing future care decisions as we age, off our children’s plate. The continuity of care ensures we will always be cared for at a place where we have made new friends. After much research, many visits, and some soul searching, we walked into a floor plan that was perfect for our needs. Our first reaction was that this looked like home. I have over forty years of sailing experience during which I sailed many different types of sailboats. Then in 2002, my girlfriend and I saw a 45-foot sailboat she remarked that even as big/tall as I was, I COULD cruise/live-a-board that boat pretty easily. I bought it, moved into it in August 2003 and lived/sailed in it happily for 17 years. However, as I aged and at the urging of my family, I chose to move to a senior living community. When I first got to Blue Skies, I asked them to show me the SMALLEST one-bedroom apartment they had. When I first saw it (530 sq. ft), I was impressed at how much larger it was than my sailboat! I moved in March 31, 2020. Richard S. As a brand new resident who resided at both campuses initially until finally moving into Blue Skies East, I can honestly say that literally EVERYONE (admin, staff, residents) bent over backwards to do everything in their power to insure my smooth transition. I STRONGLY urge ANYONE even considering retiring ANYWHERE else to STOP that process and, as fast as you can run, don't walk to the Blue Skies campus of your choice. You WON'T regret it.
