Mary Ruby Apparel closing in May after 67 years in business By LAURIE WINSLOW World Staff Writer Apr 16, 2014 Updated Feb 13, 2019 By LAURIE WINSLOW World Staff Writer People are invited to "come buy and say good-bye" as longtime Tulsa icon Mary Ruby Apparel prepares to close. The women's apparel store, which has been in business since 1947, will stay open through May or until everything has been sold, including the fixtures. Items are reduced 25 percent to 40 percent. Connie Richter, the owner for 20 years, said she hates to close but it's time to put Mary Ruby to bed. In part, she plans to spend more time visiting her 92-year-old mother in Indiana. "I'm just going to retire and do things I want to do," Richter said. "I may eventually open a smaller store." Founded in 1947 by friends Mary Carle and Ruby Holiway, the women's boutique catered to many downtown workers who visited the store, which for years was located in different storefronts along Cherry Street. Carle's daughter, Nancy Bloomfield, who still lives in Tulsa, eventually became the owner. Richter bought the store 20 years ago when she was 45. In 2001, she relocated it to 6034 S. Yale Ave. in KingsPointe Village. She has loved every minute and says what she'll miss most is the people both her staff and customers. Many of her employees have worked with her for years, including Betty Franklin, who has been associated with Richter for 40 years in different businesses. The 5,000-square-foot specialty boutique, which Richter describes as "classy, comfortable, casual and trendy all wrapped up in one," caters mainly to women ages 40 to 100. Richter also refers to it as "the biggest mother-of-the-bride store in Oklahoma."
