SUBSCRIBE NOW How Senior Pastors Can Schedule Their Week For Maximum Impact One of the first things I do when I begin coaching a Senior Pastor is lead them through a process of redesigning how they schedule their week to ensure their highest ministry priorities get consistently accomplished. It is the same process whether they serve churches of 50 to 5,000. Here’s what that process looks like: The first thing I have Senior Pastors do is pull out a piece of paper and turn it to horizontal view. Then I ask them to draw six horizontal lines, representing a typical weekly calendar, and placing the days of the week up at the top. Mark X’s On Friday And Saturday Slots For Your Days Off Your work week is now Sunday through Thursday. No more work on Fridays and Saturdays. This immediately presents two problems for the typical Senior Pastor. First, they’re still doing their sermons on Friday and Saturday. Second, they take Monday off. Both of these will change overnight if I have anything to do with it, and your family and church will thank me. If you listen to me, you’ll never work on another sermon on Friday and Saturday again. In fact, you’re going to get your sermons done by the end of the day Monday (at the latest). More like noon every Monday. And that Monday off thing? Yep, killing that too. The only thing we have control over in ministry is ourselves. This is why the most important thing you need to prioritize with regards to ministry is two consecutive days off a week to focus on self-care.

African–American women experience higher rates of obesity compared to other racial/ethnic groups. High levels of reported church attendance among African–Americans have led to the proliferation of faith-based health programs. Pastors can influence success for faith-based programs. The purpose of this study was to assess pastors’ perceptions of the L.A.D.I.E.S. intervention, designed to increase physical activity levels in sedentary African–American women. For the L.A.D.I.E.S. intervention, 31 churches (n = 418 women) were randomized at the church level to a faith-based, non-faith-based or self-guided program. All 31 pastors were invited by telephone to participate in the current study. Using a qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 pastors from participating churches. Thematic analysis and the ecological model were used to examine the findings. According to the pastors, women showed heightened awareness of the importance of health and physical activity, and increased levels of fellowship. L.A.D.I.E.S. also encouraged healthy church climates and new health ministries. Lessons learned included the need for an expanded participant base and curriculum. Pastors expressed appreciation for the culturally fitting approach of L.A.D.I.E.S. Findings have implications for faith-based and public agency partnerships.

Carnegie Mellon University Menu Teaching Excellence & Educational Innovation Eberly Center › Teaching as Research › Are All Active Learning Strategies Equally Effective? Are All Active Learning Strategies Equally Effective? Lynne Pastor teaches several sections of a graduate-level finance course that focuses on helping students apply conceptual and quantitative techniques to analyze a company’s financial health and develop a compelling business case. Approximately 30 to 40 students are enrolled in each of the three sections of the course. The course has traditionally been lecture based, and exams and written assignments have been used to assess student learning. Pastor was interested in comparing the effectiveness of three active learning strategies — a case study activity, three think-pair-share activities clumped one after the other towards the end of the class, and three think-pair-share activities spaced throughout the class. The three active learning conditions were evaluated against a “no treatment” control. Pastor implemented each of conditions in a different order across her three class sections, such that each section experienced every condition twice over the length of the course. Student learning was evaluated by comparing performance on the exam questions targeting content associated with each condition. Results indicate that students performed better in all three active learning conditions compared to the “no treatment” control. The three active learning conditions were not significantly different from each other.
